Roofing Challenges and Opportunities for 2021
With a vastly different political landscape, an ongoing pandemic and an uncertain economy, roofers will be facing a host of new challenges in 2021. At the start of 2020, the construction industry had added more than $900 billion to the U.S. economy according to Deloitte. This was the highest level since the recession of 2008. However, when COVID-19 hit, the industry lost $60.9 billion and more than a million workers; but 2021 is expected to bring new opportunities.
“There’s going to be a lot of change and upheaval,” explained Trent Cotney, NRCA general counsel and CEO of Cotney Construction Law.
Cotney added that all this change will also bring a lot of new opportunities for roofers who can adapt.
For example, Cotney said it’s likely stimulus money will be tied to green and renewable initiatives such as solar and green roofs, and NRCA and other organizations will offer different types of training and assistance for roofers who want to develop new skills.
Additionally, a need to allow employees to work remotely has demonstrated to many companies that they don’t need the same amount of office space as they did before the pandemic. This has left many commercial office spaces empty, with owners unwilling to invest large amounts of money in a roof replacement. This may present an opportunity for commercial roofing contractors to focus on maintenance and restoration services to their product offerings as owners look for ways to extend the lives of their roofing system or develop new ideas for how to utilize their buildings more efficiently.
Overall, while the industry will see a slight decline in commercial roofing work, there are opportunities for those who are willing to be inventive and flexible.
